SUMMARY
Initial results about research, drought- resistant rice breeding for dry land and ecological areas with difficult conditions In the last 50 years, Vietnam was one of five countries in Asia that suffered heavy losses from climate changes. It was reported that the developing of drought-resistant rice varieties is one of the most effective solutions that can save not only time but also financial issue for developing suitable rice varieties for the drought prone areas. Upland rice varieties were less invested and did not meet the current production requirements, therefore, research on drought-resistant rice breeding is necessary to create new rice varieties that tolerant to drought and have high yield and good quality. This research was focus on selecting, examining, and creating initial rice lines for droughttolerant rice breeding for rain fed land and areas with water deficit. The research also examined the growth of the selected rice lines in different rice grow ecological regions to find the most suitable lines for each region. By December 2012, 343 lines were collected and evaluated and 192 lines were polymorphismed to identified the drought tolerant traits, 1645 lines were selected for rainfed upland areas, and 1920 lines were selected for water decifit areas. In addition, numerous rice varieties were sent to national rice testing systems to test the adaptation capacities (CH16, CN1, LC93-4, LCH33 and LCH37). The rice varieties LCH33, LCH37, CH16 and LC93-4 were promising varieties which meet project’s initial objectives.
